Rita’s of Carrboro Raises money for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Fund this June

For the whole month of June, Rita’s of Carrboro will be raising funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research in the area of Pediatric Cancer. The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has evolved from a front yard lemonade stand to a nation-wide movement, named in honor of the little girl who started it all when she was only 4 until she lost her battle with cancer in 2006. The foundation is committed to primary research into new cures and treatments as well as education and raising awareness of the silent killer that touches us all.
Since the summer of 2006, the 500+ Rita’s stores have raised nearly 2 million dollars for ALSF. Local franchise owner Todd Doros and his partner Geoff Henslee would like to add to that total by raising as much as they can within the next month. Rita’s is making donations by selling their signature “Alex’s Lemonade” Italian Ice for $1.00 and selling "lemon" cards for an additional dollar that are put on display around the store. Other events going on this month in honor of Alex’s Lemonade stand fund drive include a “family Night” with games and Prizes, a "Take your Picture with Ice guy" night where donated photos can be traded in for a free Italian Ice, and possibly a free lemonade Ice stand in The Pit on the campus of UNC.
Owner Todd Doros encourages anyone to find out more about ALSF at www.alexslemonade.org. "I can’t think of a better group of people to work with really" Todd states. "And to hear how it all started..well…I don’t see how anyone can be on the sidelines in this fight. If you don’t come to Rita’s, you can use their website to set up your own stand anywhere you want…Even in your own front yard."
Rita’s of Carrboro is located in the Carr Mill Mall right across from Elmo’s Diner. Their hours of operation are 11am to 10pm 7 days a week through the summer. More information can be found on at www.ritasfranchises.com/carrboro.
Wootini and Mexican Artist Yahid Rodríguez Collaborate On Art Mini-figure series

Carrboro, NC — About 3 years ago, Wootini and Yahid "Serial Killer" Rodríguez stumbled upon each other on a message board, and started planning to create a miniature art figure series called the "Nahualli." After much anticipation and patience, the plan became a reality and is now available.
Yahid Rodríguez, a designer from Mazatlán, México, was looking to bring his "Nahualli" characters to life, while Wootini, an art gallery founded by Michael Maher and located in Historic Carr Mill in Carrboro, NC, was looking for a unique style that was suited to creating an art mini-figure. After a few private messages and emails, the long journey to create the series began and culminated in creating this series of collectible art mini-figures. "I wanted to make a blind box series designed completely by one artist with his vision in mind," says Maher. "We also wanted to make sure people could get more than one full set if they purchased a full flat." Flats are known as the display box that contains the smaller mini-figure packages, which in the case of the “Nahualli” contain 24 figures. “Blind box”, sometimes called "mystery box," means that what is contained in each box is a mystery, similar to baseball card packaging. Often some figures are rarer than others; in the case of the "Nahualli" each flat contains one rare figure or ultra rare figure.
The "Nahualli" according to Yahid is derived from an old tale told to Méxican children about creatures that made a pact with a demon called “Nahuales”. While looking like normal people by day, the “Nahuales” could transform into various animals and cause mischief at night. This inspired a child to try to become a "Nahuale" when he 'grew up.'
"Nahualli is naughty by nature and drives his entire town crazy with his pranks! He uses his costumes to scare everyone around, committed to one day be known as the greatest Nahuale in history," says Yahid. "His friends don't know whether to be afraid or just laugh at him, but one thing is for sure, he strives to become a real Nahuale no matter the consequences."
Yahid Rodríguez is a graphic designer who always dreamed of making his own art toy. In his 14 years of design experience he has a number of credits to his name. He has created the Cosmos and a Go Series Mimobots design, worked at laying out newspapers, and was the lead designer for a well known Méxican regional band, "Banda El Recodo." Yahid is currently working on new projects and doing freelance work.
Wootini, est. in 2003, is an art gallery showcasing art in the Pop Pluralism movement and art items derived from works such as Designer Vinyl Figures. Production credits include "Dero" and "Squire" by Jermaine Rogers, and "Glamour Cat" by Scott Musgrove.
Nahualli are available now at Wootini Gallery and will be made available to other approved retail outlets through their distribution partner, DKE Toys (Dov Kelemer Enterprises Inc). DKE is a specialized wholesale distributor of urban vinyl, designer art objects, toy figurines, and plush.
Fedora, a new women's clothing store, can be reached at 919-969-1511.
